Drivers and other road users in the Western North Region have been urged to be disciplined on the various stretches to ensure accident-free Christmas celebrations before, during and after the festival.

According to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in the Western North Region, road users especially drivers should maintain their vehicles in service delivering to the good people of the country.

At a brief sensitization exercise with the Sefwi Wiawso branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) held at the lorry terminal in Sefwi Dwenase, Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Juliana Forson noted the need to avoid unnecessary overtaking, overloading, over speeding and to avoid fatigue to ensure safety on the roads.

ASP Juliana also warned drivers to always make sure their head lights are always at work before they move their vehicles to avoid crashes.

That notwithstanding, she advised motorists to be careful and to observe road traffic regulations especially in this harmattan season to save lives and property, stressing that “every passenger wants to travel and get home alive to celebrate the festivity with their respective families but not ending up in a morgue.”

On the part of the Western North regional Head of the National Road Safety Authority, Mr. Victor Bilson indicated that over 50 lives have been lost from roads accident for the past 11 months within the region.

For this reason, he is calling on motorists to constantly check their tires to avoid using worn-out tyres and defective headlights by way of observing road safety regulations to ensure an accident-free festive season in the region and the country at large.
