The Vice Chancellor (VC) for University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), Prof. Richard Amankwa, has revealed that the University would open its doors to admit more foreign students to enable the university to raise more revenue.
Prof. Amankwa said due to internationalization and globalization, it is imperative that every university has foreign staff members as well as students, which he believes would impact the school’s finances positively.
“When we get about a hundred foreign students…One important thing about having foreign students is that the foreign students pay higher fees which helps the university to progress.”
The Vice Chancellor made these comments on the sidelines of the University’s 17th matriculation ceremony which was held virtually as part of their efforts to observe the Covid-19 protocols.
Speaking to the media, the VC said preparations are underway to engage Ghanaian companies within the West African sub-region to be ambassadors and points of contact for UMAT, where foreigners can have access to the University’s information and admission forms to increase the number of foreign students.
Prof. Richard Amankwa also challenged newly matriculated students to be curious enough to learn and discover new things which would help in solving significant problems confronting the world to make it a better place.
UMAT, which currently has two campuses; the Tarkwa Campus and Essikadu Campus, has admitted 2,393 out of the over 5,000 who applied for admission this year.
Out of the admitted figure, 21% are females but due to the school’s mainstreaming policy, 50% is allocated for female participation.
