Opinion: Are contraceptives really effective?

“I lost consciousness after missing my period for a week despite being on birth control,” says Pamela a level 300 student of UEW lamented.

Do you get anxious or nervous after missing your period after sex?

Guys, do you get a panic attack when your partner tells you she missed her period a few days after sex? There have been issues of people complaining about how they were failed by a birth control method.

Boom! Boom! Boom! that’s how your heart beats when you get to know your contraception failed. The question is, did it fail you? or did you fail yourself? Think through.

Birth Control also known as contraception is a method or device used to prevent pregnancy. Birth control has been used since ancient times but effective and safe birth control methods only became available in the 20th century. Some cultures limit or discourage access to birth control because they consider it to be morally, religiously, or politically undesirably. The most effective methods of birth control are sterilization employing vasectomy in males and tubal ligations in females. These contraceptives are guaranteed 100% effective. These are permanent but are individuals ready to undergo that? ” It is so painful,” some people say, “Ei, how can I live my life knowing that I am permanently infertile? others say.

Given this, other methods of contraception are made available, however, they are 99 or 90% effective. There is hormonal and non-hormonal contraception. Hormonal contraception contains hormones called estrogen and progestin which work on your hormones. Examples of these are Contraceptive pills: These can be Daily pills or Emergency pills. Failure to take a single daily pill can lead to pregnancy

The implant: This is placed under the arm and serve as a birth control for three years. An IUD is also placed in the uterus and can last up to ten years. The Depo Prover-a shot also last for 3months.

Whereas most women complain about the side effects of these hormonal contraceptives, others have little or no side effects. These side effects however go away on their own after a few months. Some of the side effects are Weight gain, irregular periods, acne, nausea, sore breast etc.

Non-Hormonal Contraception on the other hand creates a barrier between the sperm and the egg, changing the chemistry in the reproductive tract. Non-hormonal does not work on your hormones. Some examples are the male and female condom, cervical cap, diaphragm, vasectomy, spermicide, etc.

But why do contraceptives fail? Contraception fails if not used appropriately. Wondering why you still conceived even on birth control? Most ladies complain about how an emergency pill {e-pill} failed them. According to studies, e-pills work primarily by delaying ovulation. Hormone-based medications such as levonorgestrel pills may prevent pregnancy by temporarily blocking eggs from being released. However, most ladies happen to take this pill when ovulation has already occurred. Here the pill doesn’t perform its function because ovulation has taken place. One dangerous issue is, the most e-pill a lady should take in a period of a year is two. But NO, most ladies abuse this pill by substituting it for everyday contraceptives. This can lead to PCOS and other reproductive issues.

The IUD may fail if the device shifts to the other side of your uterus. That is why it is advisable to have it checked regularly by your doctor.

The condom you used might have expired or had a puncture. All these need to be checked.

Others choose to go for the withdrawal method which works about 78% of the time. Cast your mind back and recall how you nearly slapped your lady when she told you she is pregnant even though you knew very well you pulled out. Yes, it happens. Studies show that it is possible for pre-cum to fertilize an egg. Again, a single drop of semen left in the penis can fertilize an egg on the second attempt. It is advisable to see your doctor, get examined, and choose the safe contraception method.
