Workers at the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) are alleging that the top officials of the state-owned company have all surpassed their pension age limit.
According to Edgar Tetteh, the Local Union Chairman of VALCO, all the management of the state-owned organization are retirees, but they are at post.
The claim comes on the back of a protest they staged on Monday, October 31, 2022, to express their displeasure over what they described as poor working conditions at the company due to the aged leadership.
Speaking to Nana Yaa Brefo on the Anopa Bofo) Morning Show on Angel FM/TV, the Local Union Chairman of VALCO, Mr Tetteh, reaffirmed that their protest was to seek the betterment of the company with fresh ideas.
He further alleged that the management which is full of retirees has given themselves contracts for their own selfish gains.
“All the management at post are above 60 years, they are all retirees some are 64, 65, 68, 69, and even there was one at 84 years. They have given themselves contracts in the company for their own benefits,” he boldly alleged.
He explained that the presence of these aged officials has to some extent derailed the progress of the company which calls for new ideas.
‘It is a scientific environment, and the processes are there, that is why we, all the time, need the youth who are strong and active to work, not those on pension. They are overburdening the company with their numerations. That is why we said yesterday that we are tired of them. They have done what they can and should go home. When we need them, we will go to them,” he explained in Twi.
According to the staff, despite their calls, the accused retirees seem unconcerned about their actions but rather feel offended.
Against, this background, Edgar Tetteh furthered and accused the Chief Executive Officer and the Board Chairman of the company of conniving to shut down the plant from the power source that made the whole area experience light out on Monday evening.
Volta Aluminum Company Limited (VALCO) was founded and formerly owned by Kaiser Aluminum but it is now fully owned and operated by the Ghana government.
