Sulley Muntari ends football career after 20 years

Former Ghanaian International, Sulley Ali Muntari, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age 38.

The midfielder who has been club-less after ending his stay with Ghana Premier League giants, Accra Hearts of Oak in the summer, says it was time to hang his boot after an illustrious 20-year career.

Announcing his retirement via UK-based Sky Sports, the former AC Milan, Inter Milan, Udinese and Sunderland player indicated that he is now done with the sport as active player.

“I just did a few months with the local side [Hearts of Oak]. My son wanted me to play. I didn’t play for almost three years, then my son decided to ask me to go and play. I did that, but now I’m done,” Sulley Muntari told Sky Sports on Monday, November 28, 2022.

Muntari featured for Ghana between 2002 to 2014 and played an integral role in the country’s qualification for three consecutive World Cups; Germany (2006), South Africa (2010) and Brazil (2014). He also earned 80 caps for the Black Stars and scored 20 goals.

He began his career in Ghana with Accra-based Liberty Professionals before joining Serie A club, Udinese where he played for five years before moving to the English Premier League for Portsmouth.

He played for Sunderland, Pescara, Deportivo La Coruna, Albacete, and Al-Ittihad.

In Italy, he won the 2010 UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan in his four year stay with the Nerrazuri club before switching camp to city rivals AC Milan.

Sulley Muntari won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2007-08, two Seria A titles with Inter Milan (2008-09, 2009-100, two Coppa Italia titles (2009-10, 2010-11), two Supercoppa Italiana (2008 and 2011).

He also added to his accolades the 2010 UEFA Champions League as well as the FIFA Club World Cup in same year with Inter Milan.
