The United State of America has announced a $5 million donation to Ghana to improve the performance of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and ensure quality of health services.

The funding designed fully for the smooth operation of the scheme, was announced by the Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer on Monday, March 20, 2023.

It came to light when the ambassador joined the CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, to launch a five-year agreement aimed at advancing NHIA’s strategic purchaser role.

As part of the agreement, the NHIA on the other hand will be contributing $1.7 million towards this project making a total of $6.7 million.

“The USG funding will support the digitization of NHIA processes, make available the Scheme’s performance data, and will ensure that health services delivery is safe and effective.

“This five-year agreement will advance NHIA’s strategic purchaser role by improving its capacity to communicate transparently with all stakeholders and ensure the quality of healthcare services being purchased,” the US ambassador said as quoted by the NHIA in a statement.
