A member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has claimed that research from has shown that most Ghanaians will soon die of cancer due to the consumption of mercury polluted water.

“In 15 years, many of us could be facing cancer, and doctors have confirmed that survival rates may be low,” he claimed on Angel Morning Show on Tuesday morning.

He has therefore called on Trades Union Congress (TUC) to limit its planned nationwide strike to just one day.

He believes the union should prioritize pushing the government to provide insurance for every worker in the country over strikes.

Owusu further expressed concern about the government’s handling of critical issues, particularly the pollution of water sources.

“Due to government’s inaction, everyone is becoming sick. When they negotiate for wage increases, they should also demand insurance premiums to cover the harm caused by the government’s failure to address the contamination of our waters,” he said.

He emphasized that polluted water is a major health risk for workers, potentially leading to illness.

“When workers fall sick due to drinking polluted water, they should have insurance to help them access medical care,” Owusu added.

He further noted that citizens participating in demonstrations should also demand insurance coverage, warning that the ongoing pollution could have dire consequences in the future.
