The 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency, Emmanuel Adotey Allotey, has emphasized the significance of the National Economic Dialogue in shaping Ghana’s development.
Speaking on the Angel Morning Show with Saddick Adams on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, he described the event, held by President John Mahama on Monday, March 3, 2025, as a crucial platform for gathering diverse perspectives on economic management.
According to Mr. Allotey, the dialogue was designed to solicit ideas from various stakeholders, including economists, private sector players, and political parties, to develop policies that serve the nation effectively.
“Although the NDC is a social democratic party, we recognize the need to incorporate ideas from capitalists, academia, and other political groups to create a well-rounded economic strategy,” he stated.
He further explained that the discussions were structured around six key thematic areas, including strategies to enhance private sector growth, taxation policies, and fostering a business-friendly environment.
He highlighted concerns over the collapse of banks, savings, and loans institutions under the previous government, which led to the loss of over 5,000 jobs.
Additionally, Mr. Allotey stressed the importance of debt management, acknowledging that borrowing is an inevitable part of governance therefore the reason for adding a debt control sector.
“No government can function without taking loans, but it is essential to manage these funds effectively to prevent misuse and ensure national development,” he remarked.
Expressing disappointment over the absence of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the event, Mr. Allotey criticized their decision to decline an official invitation.
He described their absence as a missed opportunity, especially given the outcome of the last election, which he believes reflected public dissatisfaction with their governance.
“I am deeply disappointed that the NPP refused to attend. Having just left office, they should have used this opportunity to engage in discussions and reflect on the verdict Ghanaians delivered through the polls,” he said.
He concluded by emphasizing the dialogue’s significance and the NDC’s commitment to inclusive governance, stating that engaging different perspectives would lead to more effective policies for economic growth.
