Former Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Hajia Ibrahim Hussien Hamdatu, has called for the removal of taxes on sanitary pads to make them more affordable for students.

She made this call on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) with Saddick Adams, stating that the high cost of sanitary pads, due to taxation, is the main reason students struggle to access them.

“The reason students can’t buy sanitary pads is because of the price… Accessibility of these sanitary pads is not the problem, it is the cost,” Hajia Hamdatu emphasized, highlighting the need for affordable menstrual hygiene products.

She also suggested that a sanitary pad factory be established in Ghana to enable utilize local raw materials, which could increase production and make the products more affordable for all.

“Why can’t they open a sanitary pads factory in Ghana? We have raw materials, so we can produce more and sell in such a way that everyone can afford,” Hajia Hamdatu added in her proposal.

She was adamant policymakers would consider a long-term initiative to the benefits of all and sundry through investing in local production.

“By removing taxes on sanitary pads and promoting local manufacturing, Ghana can take a significant step towards ensuring that menstrual hygiene products are accessible and affordable for all students, regardless of their socio-economic background,” the CPP former chairperson stressed.
