The former Deputy Health Minister, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has called on the media to shift their focus from politics to social issues that can educate and benefit the public.
During a panel discussion on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Thursday, April 10, 2025, Mr Acquah expressed concerns that the media is failing to fulfil its role in promoting positive change within society.
This conversation arose amidst ongoing discussions about fraudulent schemes that have been adversely affecting many individuals in Ghana.
Mr. Acquah believes that the media’s priorities are misaligned. He stated that their eagerness for political coverage and sensationalism surpasses their commitment to addressing social issues that could genuinely assist the nation.
“I believe that the media has a big role to play to help better the country. But their desire for politics and sensationalism is more than their desire to cover social issues like this that will help the country,” he remarked.
He further emphasised that the media should actively promote awareness among citizens who may be unaware of the scams, in order to prevent them from falling victims.
Additionally, he urged both the media and politicians to exercise diligence in their actions to maintain credibility and avoid tarnishing their reputations.
