The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has outlined a clear and ambitious roadmap to strengthen the authority and improve public confidence in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, highlighted three key pillars of his vision: restoring the NHIA’s core mandate, enhancing transparency, and ensuring the success of government-backed healthcare initiatives.
Touching on restoring the NHIA’s core mandate, Dr. Bampoe said his vision is a renewed focus on the Authority’s fundamental responsibility—prompt reimbursement of claims for health services and medications provided to patients.
He emphasized that ensuring health facilities are paid on time is critical for the smooth operation of the entire healthcare system.
“In my first year as CEO, we will push up the percentage of funds received for claims payments to 65 percent and 70 percent in my second year. The NHIA must do exactly what it was established to do,” he added.
He made this known at his first press briefing at the Head Office in Accra on Monday, April 14, 2025.
Regarding the restoration of public confidence and elimination of illegal payments, Dr. Bampoe also pledged to rebuild trust in the NHIS, which has faced criticism in recent years due to challenges such as illegal charges.
“We will work hard to eliminate illegal charges drastically,” he stated.
The CEO noted that a robust monitoring system and public education campaign will form part of the strategy to address these issues.
In line with the government’s broader health agenda, he reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to ensuring that the Free Primary Healthcare and Mahama Care programs function efficiently.
