President Mahama suspends Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo

President John Dramani Mahama has suspended the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, following the establishment of a prima facie case in relation to three petitions submitted against her.

The decision was made in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State.

The Presidency, in a statement signed by Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu on Monday April 22, 2025, confirmed the suspension and announced the formation of a five-member committee tasked with investigating the petitions.

The committee, formed in line with constitutional provisions, will conduct a full inquiry into the allegations brought against the Chief Justice.

The members of the committee include Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court, who will serve as Chairman, Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu of the Supreme Court, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana.

The statement emphasized that the suspension takes immediate effect, pending the outcome of the committee’s proceedings.
