The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) has marked the 2025 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day Observation (WRCDO) with orphans at the Chosen Children’s Centre (CCC) in Darkuman, Greater Accra Region.
The event took place on Thursday, May 8, 2025, under the theme: “Protect Humanitarians, They Are on the Side of Humanity.”
The Ghana Red Cross Society is a volunteer-based humanitarian organisation that assists the sick and vulnerable in communities. The programme encompassed health and social care, disaster risk reduction, and first aid.
The president of GRCS, Kwame Gyimah-Akwafo, stated in his speech that their mission seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering by mobilising the power of humanity.
He emphasised that they are the leading volunteer-based humanitarian service provider in Ghana, aiming to work together for humanity and deliver efficient services to support the vulnerable in society.
“The vision of the movement is to alleviate suffering in all areas, whether it is the impact of conflict or health emergencies. At every stage, every Red Cross volunteer in the community ensures that they can alleviate suffering for those in need.
“Ghana Red Cross does this by always providing assistance, regardless of who is involved. We are very non-discriminatory, very neutral, and we extend our help to everyone, whether they are affected by disasters, floods, health emergencies, or any other unfortunate events,” he explained.
He further elaborated that they actively engage with communities to assist those in need. According to him, they hold this celebration annually to honour the founder of the Red Cross Society, Henry Dunant, and to motivate those who are suffering in every community to alleviate their distress.
He affirmed that this year’s programme aimed to foster social interaction with children from less privileged backgrounds at the Chosen Children’s Centre (CCC) and those from the Nima Care Foundation (NCF).
In an interview with the media, the General Secretary of GRCS, Gayoni Gbolo Solomon, stated that the GRCS is an international humanitarian organisation established by an Act of Parliament (Act 10 of 1958), and is affiliated with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Societies.

He said, “We’re not an NGO; it was the government that established us under Act 10 of 1958. In Ghana, the first Act of 1958 includes the Ghana Red Cross Society.
“Since then, we have accomplished much to assist those suffering, particularly during disasters. For instance, in the Upper East Region, we built houses for those affected by floods.”
In collaboration with GRCS, LC Wakiki donated items, including shoes and clothing, to mark this year’s celebration.
Kenneth Odoom, the Chief Accountant of LC Wakiki, asserted that their primary motive for the donation was the belief that everyone deserves to be well-dressed.
