The Minority Caucus in Parliament has raised alarm over what it describes as egregious violations of the Constitution, following the absence of President Mahama, his Vice as well as the Speaker of Parliament, without constitutionally swearing-in an acting President.
Ghana technically has no leader as President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin are all out of the country.
President Mahama is currently in Togo attending the African Union Debt Conference, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang is reportedly in the United Kingdom receiving medical attention, while Speaker Bagbin has been outside the country since May 8.
The minority in a statement issued Monday, 12 May, 2025, described the development as “conspicious and alarming”, expressing worrying about the country currently without a constitutionally mandated Head of State.
Citing Article 60 of the 1992 Constitution, the minority reminded that when both the President and Vice President are unavailable, the Speaker of Parliament must be sworn in to act as President.
