In a decisive move to address persistent flooding in the capital, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has confirmed plans to demolish unauthorized structures on the Sakumono Ramsar site and buildings encroaching on waterways in Tema and its surrounding areas.
This initiative follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, issued last Thursday.
Minister Ocloo stated, “This time, there will be no exceptions. We have all witnessed the consequences. If a building is on a waterway, it has to go.”
The demolition exercise is set to commence following the confirmation of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees for the Greater Accra Region.
Minister Ocloo received a call from the Presidency instructing immediate action to clear illegal structures in Sakumono and Tema. “We will take action to ensure that those buildings are removed,” she affirmed.
In a related effort, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korley constituency, has urged assembly members to collaborate in addressing land encroachments at the Osu landing beach.
This call was prompted by complaints from community members regarding individuals occupying the area unlawfully.
During a recent tour of the constituency with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr. Agyemang Rawlings highlighted the importance of addressing such encroachments.
She said, “The work you do is not only about ongoing projects; it’s about the real challenges that the people are facing. When the MCE sees it himself, these issues will feature in our plans.”
She stressed the necessity of empowering the assembly to tackle these issues effectively, stating.
“We have to deal with this issue so that we don’t get to the point where we are demolishing people’s homes when we can prevent it in the first place,” she added.
