‘No fees stress’ policy won’t scrap students’ allowances — Mahama assures

President John Dramani Mahama has assured students that the government’s new ‘No Fees Stress’ policy will not replace or scrap existing student allowances and loans.

Speaking at the official launch of the initiative on Thursday, July 4, 2025, at the SDA College of Education in Asokore, Koforidua, President Mahama explained that the policy is designed to ease the burden of high entry costs for students entering public tertiary institutions, without affecting the financial support systems already in place.

“This policy is complementary, not substitutionary. It has not replaced existing allowances and loans but lightens the heaviest burden, which is the cost of entering, that keeps thousands of brilliant students outside the gates of institutions like this,” President Mahama said.

The ‘No Fees Stress’ policy aims to remove upfront fees that often serve as barriers for many first-year students, ensuring greater access to higher education for all Ghanaians, regardless of their financial background.

Mahama emphasized that the initiative is about fairness and restoring dignity to students, ensuring that education remains a right and not a privilege for only the wealthy.
