The Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS) has unveiled plans to construct a humanitarian hospital in the Greater Accra Region.
The Society noted that the initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening emergency response and healthcare delivery across the country.
Speaking to the press during the 2026 celebration of Ghana Red Cross Day at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons on Friday, May 8, 2026, the President of the GRCS, Dr Edward Donkor, stated that the proposed facility will serve as a central hub for both medical care and disaster preparedness.
“It will cater to the sick, but it will also address other needs, such as how to respond to disasters,” he revealed.
According to Dr Donkor, when completed, the facility will also function as a training and knowledge centre, equipping individuals and communities with practical skills to respond effectively to emergencies and crises.
“It will also teach people how to find solutions during emergencies and how to prepare for them,” he said.
He explained that the hospital will extend beyond traditional healthcare. In addition to treating patients, it will emphasise disaster response, emergency preparedness, and community resilience-building.
Dr. Donkor urged the public to support the initiative, noting that a major fundraising campaign is scheduled for November to mobilise additional resources.
He added that the project is expected to be completed in approximately one and a half years, after which it will begin delivering critical services to communities nationwide.
