The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Akwatia, Eastern Region, has refuted claims that the party is defunct following its loss to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the recent by-election.
According to the party, the NPP remains vibrant and formidable in managing its day-to-day affairs.
This response comes amid growing discussions in the constituency suggesting that the NPP no longer exists after its defeat to the NDC in the 2025 by-election, which was held following the death of the late Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Speaking at the party office in the constituency during a press conference on Monday, May 18, 2026, Constituency Secretary Eugene Opoku-Acheampong reiterated that the party remains fully active and continues to maintain its popularity.

He emphasized the party’s relevance, arguing that if it were truly defunct, there would be no party structures operating in the area.
Mr. Opoku-Acheampong added that the NPP remains focused and determined to reclaim both the parliamentary and presidential seats in the 2028 general elections.
On his part, Constituency Organizer Jones Awuku asserted that the strong interest shown by individuals in purchasing nomination forms to contest the recently ended polling station executives’ elections demonstrates the enduring attractiveness of the “elephant family.”
