The Office of the Rent Commissioner and the Rent Control Department have directed private hostel owners and operators to put a temporal hold on any proposed increase in hostel accommodation fees for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The decision follows concerns over rising hostel fees, which have become a burden to students, parents, and guardians.
The authorities are set to engage stakeholders, including hostel owners, students, and tertiary institution authorities, to discuss sustainable and fair measures on hostel pricing and standards.
The meeting will address concerns on fee increments, compliance with rent regulations, and practical solutions to ensure affordability and fairness.
Stakeholders are encouraged to attend and cooperate with the directive.
