The Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, has dismissed claims that radio signals and towers cause cancer.
Speaking at the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2026, he said being closer to a tower can actually be healthier for users as it reduces the power a device needs to transmit.
Rev. Fianko emphasized that radio-frequency levels are far below safety thresholds and are regulated to prevent harm.
He highlighted the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining telecommunications infrastructure, urging cooperation between network operators, contractors, and communities to protect critical infrastructure and improve service quality.
He stressed that the NCA conducts annual inspections of sites to ensure they pose no structural risks to communities.
Rev. Fianko called for streamlined approvals and cooperation to accelerate connectivity goals, saying delays and opposition hinder efforts to bring reliable connectivity to underserved areas.
