Drivers’ union threaten 20% fare increment over VIP price hikes

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG) has threatened to implement a 20% increment in transport fares nationwide if the government fails to intervene in the unilateral fare hikes by VIP bus operators.

The Regional Chairmen of C-DAG, in a statement, expressed their deep concern and dissatisfaction over the arbitrary increase in transport fares by some VIP bus operators without proper consultation with stakeholders.

“We are giving a one-week ultimatum to the Minister for Transport, the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and the National Chairman of C-DAG to immediately intervene and halt these arbitrary fare increases,” the statement read.

The drivers’ union argued that it’s unfair for one section of the transport sector to increase fares at will while commercial drivers continue to bear the rising cost of fuel, spare parts, taxes, and vehicle maintenance without any corresponding adjustments.

The union claimed the silence of the authorities is creating tension and confusion within the transport industry and among commuters. If no action is taken by Monday, drivers under C-DAG will implement the fare increment.

“We are law-abiding citizens and professionals who believe in dialogue and fairness, but we will not sit unconcerned while some operators are allowed to take unilateral decisions that affect the entire transport industry,” the statement added.

The Ministry of Transport has been called upon to engage transport unions to prevent any possible industrial unrest.
