The Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Lawyer Frederick F. Faidoo, has secured a strategic partnership with SUS Environment, a renowned Waste-to-Energy company based in China, to address the metropolis’ waste management challenges.
Earlier this year, the Mayor, accompanied by members of the Assembly’s Management and a consultant from Chriscon Limited, undertook a working visit to China in search of sustainable solutions to the city’s growing waste burden.
The visit has culminated in an agreement to establish a modern Waste-to-Energy plant in Sekondi-Takoradi. Under the proposed arrangement, the current landfill site at Sofokrom will be redeveloped to host the facility.
The project is expected to convert municipal waste into energy and generate approximately 450 megawatts of electricity for Ghana’s national grid.
Representatives of SUS Environment are scheduled to arrive in Ghana on June 15 to conduct site assessments and engage with government agencies, stakeholders, and regulatory institutions as part of the final stages toward signing a comprehensive agreement with the Assembly.
In a statement, the Metropolis said, the project is expected to be completed within two years and will provide a lasting solution to waste management challenges in the metropolis.
It added improving environmental sanitation, creating employment opportunities for the youth, stimulating local economic growth, and contributing additional power to the national electricity supply.
