Zoomlion Ghana Limited has partnered with the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, FeDEMS Group Ltd, Dredge Masters Ghana Limited, the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service and MMDAs to launch a three-day cleanup and desilting exercise across flood-prone parts of Accra.
The exercise started Wednesday, June 10, at 7:00 a.m. and runs through June 12.

Teams are targeting major drainage channels and waterways in Roman Ridge, Mallam, Paloma, Circle, Kaneshie and GBC areas to clear waste and silt that block the free flow of rainwater.
The initiative follows recent heavy downpours that caused flooding in parts of the capital, renewing concern over poor waste disposal and clogged drainage systems.

Speaking during the exercise, Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO Dennis Nartey said the joint effort shows a collective commitment to tackling one of the main causes of flooding in the metropolis.
He explained that every heavy rainfall leaves large amounts of waste and debris that end up in drains. The situation worsens when residents dump refuse directly into waterways, blocking storm water flow.

Nartey said many flood challenges are man-made and require a change in public attitude.
He urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly through designated collection systems instead of relying on rainwater to carry refuse away.
He also promoted the “No Do No Do” campaign, which discourages indiscriminate littering and calls for active public participation to protect lives and property.

Chief Corporate Communications Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited Sophia Kudjordji said the exercise aims to reduce flood incidents by keeping drains and gutters free from obstructions.
“We are dredging and cleaning these gutters to ensure the free flow of water,” she stated. Kudjordji added that while rainfall cannot be prevented, proper sanitation practices and regular maintenance can limit flood damage.

She called on residents to support sanitation authorities by not dumping refuse into drains, stressing that a clean environment is a shared responsibility.
Head of Government and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion Emma Adwoa Appiah Osei-Duah said the company is pleased to partner NADMO, FeDEMS, and other agencies at a time of frequent heavy rains. She noted that waste carried by floodwaters often blocks drains and increases flooding risks.

The three-day programme is designed to clear critical drainage channels and reflects a shared commitment to protecting communities and improving environmental conditions across the capital.

The cleanup forms part of broader efforts to address flood risks through sustained sanitation interventions and stakeholder collaboration as the rainy season continues.
