Stop blaming government for every flood – Yaw Dabo to Ghanaians

Ghanaian actor and comedian, Yaw Dabo has joined the growing discussion on Accra’s recurring flooding problem, stressing that citizens must share responsibility instead of placing the entire blame on the government.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on June 10, 2026, Dabo stated that although inadequate infrastructure contributes to the flooding situation, the actions of residents also play a significant role.

According to him, the indiscriminate disposal of waste into drains and gutters is one of the major causes of flooding in the capital.

“Flooding is not solely a government problem; citizens also have a role to play. The indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters and drains leads to blockages, and that is one of the key factors behind the recurring floods,” Dabo said.

The actor also praised the efforts of the Buzstop Boys, a volunteer sanitation group that has earned public recognition for its cleanup activities across Accra.

Dabo questioned why successive governments have not officially partnered with or provided support for the group despite its commitment to improving sanitation.

“I don’t understand why the Buzstop Boys have not been given a government contract considering the remarkable work they continue to do. I haven’t seen any sanitation agency match their level of dedication. If they are provided with the necessary resources and equipment, I believe Accra’s flooding challenges could be significantly reduced within the next five years,” he said.

He further advocated stricter punishment for individuals who dispose of waste in waterways, proposing that offenders should be made to participate in sanitation exercises.

“Individuals found dumping refuse into water bodies should be arrested and detained for two weeks, during which they should join the Buzstop Boys in clearing gutters and desilting drains across the city,” he suggested.
