Illegal miners have taken over parts of the abandoned Agenda 111 hospital site at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, and residents fear the multimillion-cedi facility could be lost to flooding.
Former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, K.T. Hammond, has condemned the takeover, calling it “nonsense.” He said he was disappointed to see a project he secured now overrun by excavators and reptiles after construction stalled.

According to him, the hospital would have been completed under the NPP, but the situation has worsened under the current NDC government.
The hospital, about 90 percent complete, was started in 2021 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s Agenda 111 programme. It now sits within 100 metres of the District Police Headquarters, District Assembly, and District Court.
Assembly Member for Bodwesango, Mr. Agyekum described it as “heartbreaking” that destruction continues beside the police station.

A resident Kate Adu Nyaanta said the excavations could make the hospital prone to flooding and put patients and health workers at risk. Another resident Madam Akosua Yiwah warned that mining near the Jimi River could alter its path and trigger serious flooding.
Residents are urging the Ministry of Lands, Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Minerals Commission, and Police to intervene immediately to save the project.
