The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has proposed the adoption of a comprehensive national sanitation policy to address recurring flooding, particularly in Accra.
According to him, such a policy should serve as the government’s roadmap in tackling the challenge head-on.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin argued that the recent two-day clean-up exercise directed by President John Dramani Mahama will not resolve the country’s sanitation and flooding problems.
“The clean-up exercise is not the solution. The solution is a well-thought-out policy on sanitation. That is what we need as a country,” he stated on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
The Afutu Member of Parliament therefore called for the urgent rollout of a national policy rather than reliance on short-term measures.
“We need the government to rise to the occasion and address the nation on this matter,” he added.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin further suggested that the House invite the Minister of Works and Water Resources to appear before Parliament and outline the government’s strategic plan on sanitation and flood management.
He expressed concern over the impact of recent floods on citizens, describing government responses as “delayed and knee-jerk.”
According to the Minority Leader, the plight of flood victims has not received the necessary attention from the government because they are not public officials or politicians.
