Ghanaian actress, Harriet Naa Akleh Okanteh, popularly known as Auntie Bee, has opened up about the financial struggles she faces despite spending years in the movie industry, saying her acting career has left her with little to show.
Speaking in an interview, the Kumawood actress said that although acting made her popular, it has not provided her with lasting financial security.
“My acting career left me with nothing. I have nothing to boast of after years of acting,” she said.
Auntie Bee explained that she previously supplemented her acting career by working as a master of ceremonies (MC), but noted that the profession has become highly competitive, making it difficult to secure jobs.
“The work I was doing alongside my acting career was MCing, but now being an MC is common. The world is big, and if someone doesn’t recommend you, you won’t get the job. But whenever we get the opportunity, we do it,” she stated.
The actress also expressed gratitude to founder and leader of the Anointed Palace Chapel (APC), Rev. Obofour, for gifting her a car. However, she revealed that the vehicle is currently out of use due to mechanical problems.
“Rev. Obofour bought me a car and I appreciate him for that. But if anyone doesn’t see me with the car anymore, it’s because it has broken down and is at the fitting shop. If anyone can buy me a car, I’ll be glad. The same goes for a house,” she appealed.
Anticipating criticism over her remarks, Auntie Bee said public figures are often condemned whether they remain silent about their struggles or openly ask for support.
“After this interview, people will come out and accuse me, saying I asked for a car and a house. I hate that. If we don’t speak out, these same people will ask why we never said we needed help. But when we ask, it becomes another issue,” she lamented.
