The government has accepted the Constitution Review Committee’s recommendation to extend the tenure of the President and Parliament from 4 years to 5 years.

The decision was announced on Thursday, July 30 following the submission of the Committee’s final report.

According to the recommendation, the extension is aimed at providing more time for elected leaders to implement policies, ensure continuity in governance, and align Ghana’s electoral cycle with better planning and development outcomes.

The Constitution Review Committee had argued that a 5 year term would reduce the frequency of elections, cut costs, and allow governments to focus more on long term projects without the pressure of an early campaign cycle.

The proposal will now proceed to the necessary constitutional amendment processes, including stakeholder consultations and parliamentary approval, before it can take effect.
