The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at Aflao has called for stronger collaborative action to combat human trafficking as the world marked the International Day Against Trafficking in Persons on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
This year’s commemoration was held under the theme: “Trapped Behind the Scam.”
Speaking at the event held at the Aflao Main Station, Deputy Commissioner of GIS and Sector Commander at Aflao, Mark Asamoah Boakye, said border communities like Aflao are vulnerable and require increased community vigilance, inter-agency cooperation, and public education to curb the menace.
According to him, traffickers have developed modern methods of trafficking persons, and the GIS is closely monitoring these trends to stay ahead.
He disclosed that the GIS at Aflao has organized a training workshop for its officers to equip them to detect and combat these new trafficking methods.
Mr. Boakye urged residents, transport operators, and traditional authorities to report suspicious movements and to protect children and young people from being lured into trafficking networks.
Also speaking at the event, Justice Kudzo Normeshie, Focal Person for the International Center for Safe Migration (ICSM) and HDRSF at Aflao, called on government, security agencies, transport owners, traditional authorities, and Okada riders to help fight human trafficking in the country, with special attention to mining-affected areas.
Dickson Soku, Trustee of GPRTU Branch 5 at the Aflao Main Lorry Station, commended the Ghana Immigration Service at Aflao for organizing the commemoration.
He also urged all stakeholders to support efforts to end human trafficking in border communities.
The International Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed annually on July 30 to raise awareness of human trafficking and promote victims’ rights.
