Ghanaian languages from KG to Primary 3, English from Primary 4 — GES announces

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that Ghanaian languages will serve as the primary medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Primary Three under government’s proposed revised curriculum for basic schools.

In a statement signed by the Ministry of Education’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed on Sunday, August 2, 2026, the GES said from Primary Four to Primary Six, both Ghanaian languages and English will be used.

The Service explained that the policy is to strengthen foundational literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and cognitive development by enabling children to learn in a language they understand best in their early years.

The bilingual approach from P4 to P6, it added, will also support a smooth transition to higher levels where English assumes a greater role, while preserving competence in Ghanaian languages.

The GES further stated that foreign languages such as French, Arabic and Chinese will not be compulsory. They will be offered as optional subjects, depending on the availability of teachers and learning materials.

“The Ministry further clarifies that foreign languages such as French, Arabic, and Chinese among others are not compulsory subjects. They will be offered as optional languages for pupils who wish to acquire additional language skills,” the statement said.

It urged parents, teachers, school authorities and the media to disregard misinformation that foreign languages have been made compulsory.
