The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, has refuted claims by the minority that the majority caucus is unwilling to conduct Parliamentary business because they lost the elections.
He explained that the minority is misleading Ghanaians by stating that the government, through the Finance Minister, Dr. Amin Adams, is failing to lay the reports on the three-month budget (January to March 2025) before the House for approval.
This approval is necessary to ensure the next NDC government can pay workers who receive their salaries from the government beginning in January 2025.
Mr. Kyei-Bonsu further added that the report had been submitted to Parliament even before the elections, but the NDC minority was more focused on fighting for the majority position instead of working on the report.
He made these comments on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, after some members of the minority, especially the ranking member on the Food and Agriculture Committee of Parliament and MP for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, accused the NPP majority of being unwilling to work on the three-month budget and the consequences this may have on government workers.
“Mr. Speaker, as you said, the document was even brought here before the conduct of the elections. At the time the leader was pleading that we should have business transacted on that and the House with you participating elected not to participate so why did you turn around…,” he said in his reaction on the floor of parliament.
He further explained that because of the quarrel over who to occupy majority and minority, the minority did not show any commitment to transact business although the document had been presented at the House.
He described the minority’s assertion as inappropriate and stated, “So let it not be stated for the records that the ruling administration is failing to do business.”
