Following a targeted, intelligence‑led operation at Pokuase in the Greater Accra Region, the police have busted a human‑trafficking and organised cyber‑crime syndicate.
The Special Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, supported by Combat Teams and the Surveillance Unit of the Ghana Police, carried out the operation on Thursday.
A total of 22 suspects were arrested at the primary location in Pokuase‑Afiaman, where the police uncovered a large‑scale cyber‑fraud hub commonly referred to as a “Yahoo Boys” base.
According to the police, the suspects were found at computer systems actively facilitating their international internet‑fraud activities when officers swooped in.
“Preliminary investigations further revealed a structured hierarchy within the syndicate, including individuals responsible for enforcing control and discipline over trafficked,” a police situational report (SITREP) seen by Graphic Online said.
The police believe the syndicate forms part of a sophisticated transnational criminal network involved in human trafficking and cyber fraud, with indications that some of the younger suspects may themselves be victims of coercion and forced labour.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its firm commitment to combating organised crime, protecting vulnerable persons, and ensuring that all individuals involved in human trafficking and cyber‑related offences are brought to justice.
