Deputy Ranking Member of the Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has opposed the Public Utility Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) proposed utility tariff reduction, calling it insufficient to ease consumers’ financial burden.
Speaking with the press on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, he stated, “We say plainly, this reduction is insufficient and Ghanaian consumers deserve far better,” he said.
He emphasized that the 4.81% and 3.06% water reductions announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Committee (PURC) on March 13, 2026, are inadequate.
He highlighted that the 4.81% reduction announced by the PURC does not reflect the actual economic conditions of 2025.
“It reflects the fraction of what consumers are genuinely owed. A 4.81% reduction against a 23% cumulative increase is not relief,” he stated.
He further stated that every increase in tariffs imposed on Ghanaian consumers under the NDC administration is a direct result of the party’s policy choices.
He also called on PURC to urgently review its methodology, using verified, actual economic data, and implement a corrective adjustment that delivers at least 10% relief to consumers in the third quarter of 2026.
