President John Dramani Mahama has said the heavy rains that hit Accra on Monday, June 29, 2026 are among the most severe recorded in recent years, with preliminary data showing about 140 millimetres of rain fell on the capital in a single day.
In a Facebook post, the President said the figure far exceeds last year’s highest single-day rainfall of about 56 millimetres.
“The amount of rainfall recorded today is among the highest experienced in several years. Preliminary data indicates that approximately 140 millimetres of rain fell on Accra,” Mahama stated.
He said the intensity of the rains is “beyond our control because it is driven by changing climatic conditions.”
The President, however, also pointed to human factors, noting the impact of structures built in waterways.
“There is the issue of human behaviour. Whenever government begins removing structures built in waterways, some people accuse us of being inhumane.
“Yet when disasters such as today’s flooding occur, the consequences affect everyone. The irresponsible actions of a few individuals end up putting entire communities at risk,” he wrote.
