The Council of State has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama for what it describes as a major diplomatic success at the United Nations, following the passage of a resolution on slavery.
In a press statement issued on 27th March, 2026, the Council praised the President for his leadership in advancing Ghana’s position at the United Nations General Assembly, particularly on the global discourse surrounding slavery and its lasting impact on African people and descendants of enslaved Africans.
According to the Council of State, the passage of the resolution marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s continued advocacy for justice and historical accountability, especially as international calls for reparatory justice and recognition of the atrocities of slavery gain renewed attention.
“The Council of State extends its warmest congratulations to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, on his distinguished success at the United Nations General Assembly in advancing Ghana’s position on the global discourse on slavery and its enduring consequences,” the statement said.
The Council noted that the achievement reflects President Mahama’s visionary leadership and diplomatic acumen, emphasizing that his commitment to justice, human dignity and the protection of historical truth has once again placed Ghana at the centre of international advocacy.
It added that the President’s efforts demonstrate Ghana’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that the painful history of slavery is not distorted or ignored in modern global discussions, but rather confronted with honesty and responsibility.
The Council further stressed that the milestone reinforces Ghana’s long-standing reputation as a leading voice in Pan-Africanism and a principled advocate for human rights on the global stage.
“This notable achievement reflects His Excellency’s visionary leadership, diplomatic acumen, and unwavering commitment to justice, human dignity, and historical accountability,” the statement noted.
The Council of State also commended President Mahama for elevating Ghana’s standing internationally and for championing a cause it described as one of profound global significance, especially for Africans and the diaspora whose history continues to shape modern global relations.
It expressed confidence that the resolution will not only strengthen Ghana’s influence in international affairs but also inspire national pride and renewed commitment toward promoting fairness and equity in global governance.
“We are confident that this milestone will continue to inspire national pride and strengthen Ghana’s role in promoting equity and justice worldwide,” the Council said.
The statement concluded with an assurance of the Council’s continued support for President Mahama, urging him to continue pursuing initiatives that promote justice and strengthen Ghana’s diplomatic footprint.
“Please accept the assurances of the Council’s highest esteem and its continued support as His Excellency the President leads the nation to greater heights,” it added.
The resolution, which has been described as a major step in the global fight for justice and recognition of slavery as one of humanity’s gravest crimes, has also reignited conversations on reparations and the responsibility of nations that benefitted from the transatlantic slave trade.
