The government has announced a special support package for Ghanaians arriving on Thursday, May 21, 2026, after their evacuation from South Africa, where they were subjected to xenophobic attacks.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in an official post highlighting the government’s response to the crisis.
The Minister disclosed that all evacuated citizens will be entitled to a comprehensive assistance program designed to ease their return and reintegration.
The package comprises a welcome home financial grant to help evacuees settle back in Ghana, transportation assistance that will provide free conveyance to their various destinations across the country, and a re-integration allowance aimed at supporting their social and economic re‑establishment.
The government will also offer free psychosocial support services, including counseling and mental health care, to address trauma experienced during the attacks.
Mr. Ablakwa further mentioned that the evacuees will gain access to a special database featuring job placements and startup opportunities to foster their future employment and entrepreneurship.
The Minister emphasized that the government values and cherishes all its citizens, reaffirming its commitment to protecting and supporting Ghanaian nationals abroad.
