Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called on West African countries to take a leading role in shaping the region’s future through research, innovation and digital transformation.

The Chief of Staff stressed that the region must move beyond being passive participants in global development.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Centre for West African Studies established by the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Mr. Debrah said the new centre represents a shared commitment to developing African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges and opportunities.

He described the inauguration as a significant milestone that underscores the importance of strategic partnerships and knowledge-driven development in advancing the region’s progress.

Highlighting the critical role of research, innovation and digital transformation, Mr. Debrah said such investments are essential to shaping the future of West Africa and positioning the region to compete globally.
“The newly inaugurated Centre reflects a shared commitment to African-led solutions, strategic partnerships, and knowledge-driven development in addressing the challenges and opportunities of our time,” he said.

The Chief of Staff stressed that West Africa has the capacity to contribute meaningfully to global development and should position itself at the forefront of generating solutions to emerging economic, technological and social challenges.
“West Africa must not only participate in shaping the future, we must help define it,” he stated.

Mr. Debrah noted that institutions dedicated to research and innovation are crucial to nurturing future leaders, promoting evidence-based policymaking and equipping young people with the skills needed to drive sustainable development across the region.

He commended GIMPA, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), and all partners whose vision and collaboration made the establishment of the Centre possible.

According to him, the partnership will strengthen academic cooperation, advance knowledge and build institutions capable of supporting the long-term development of Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.

He expressed confidence that the Centre for West African Studies would serve as a hub for innovation, leadership and collaborative research, contributing significantly to regional integration and sustainable development for generations to come.
