Ghana has secured another major international win with the election of Dr. Sylvia Ama Adusu as the first female African Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
Dr. Adusu secured an impressive 130 votes from UN Member States to win the seat for the term 2026 – 2035, according to a congratulatory message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the development as “another big win for Ghana.”
“Congratulations to Ghana’s Dr. Sylvia Ama Adusu on her election as the first female African Judge of ITLOS. She secured an impressive 130 votes from UN Member States,” Mr. Ablakwa said.
He commended the Ministry’s Candidatures Bureau, staff of Ghana’s New York mission, and other partners for what he called “excellent execution” of the campaign.
“With great pleasure, I convey my best wishes for her new role,” the Minister added.
ITLOS, based in Hamburg, Germany, is the principal judicial body established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to adjudicate maritime and ocean governance disputes.
Dr. Adusu’s election marks a historic milestone for both Ghana and Africa on the global legal stage.
