Gospel singer, Empress Gifty, has shared her views on how divorce is handled, arguing that financial status often determines whether a separation becomes peaceful or chaotic.
In a video posted on social media, the musician suggested that many of the public disputes surrounding failed marriages are rooted in social class rather than the divorce itself.
Questioning why some couples make the process difficult, she said there is no need to prolong conflict when a relationship has reached its end.
“If you want to divorce, why torment? Saying you’re going to call her mother and all…,” she said.
Empress Gifty explained that affluent couples typically resolve marital issues through legal channels, allowing both parties to move on without unnecessary public confrontations.
“ When rich couples get divorced, they come to an agreement, let their lawyers handle the legal process, sign the documents and move on. They can choose whether or not to share their property, and there is no drama,” she stated.
She contrasted that with what she described as the experience of less privileged couples, who often seek intervention from relatives, religious leaders and marriage counsellors, yet still fail to save their marriages.
“For less privileged couples, there are often repeated pleas for reconciliation and several meetings involving counsellors, pastors, family elders and other relatives, yet the marriage may still end despite those efforts,” she continued.
To support her argument, Empress Gifty recounted the example of a pastor who, according to her, dissolved his marriage amicably after relocating to the United States, with both parties signing the necessary documents, dividing their assets and parting ways without exchanging insults.
