Musician, Keche Joshua, has blamed poor sanitation habits among Ghanaians, rather than political leaders, for the recurring flooding in parts of Accra.
Speaking in a video shared on his Instagram page following the recent floods, the musician argued that many people continue to dump refuse into gutters, worsening the situation whenever it rains.
According to him, a friend had blamed the country’s leaders for the flooding, but he disagreed.
“A friend was talking to me and said, ‘Bro, I think the leaders are not doing things right,’ and I told him it’s not the leaders but we Ghanaians. Ghanaians are dirty and the fooling is too much,” he said.
Keche Joshua said it is common to see people dumping refuse into drains in areas such as Circle, Nima, the Kole Lagoon, and New Town, resulting in choked gutters that overflow during heavy rainfall.
He also dismissed suggestions that demolishing structures alone would solve the flooding problem, stressing that the real issue is the country’s sanitation challenges.
“If you see the flooding areas, it’s not even about demolishing because demolishing started about 10 years ago. It’s about the dirty environment and the gutters being choked. When it rains, they overflow, and that’s what leads to the flooding,” he explained.
The musician further compared Ghana’s sanitation situation to that of other countries, saying stricter enforcement of sanitation laws elsewhere helps keep drains clean.
“Ghanaians are very dirty. When you go to the States, you won’t find this kind of dirtiness and choked gutters because the law is working. The behaviour of Ghanaians dumping refuse into gutters and anywhere is too bad,” he said.
Expressing his frustration over the devastation caused by the floods, Keche Joshua added, “God should have mercy on us. I’m so angry this morning.”
