Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Madam Shamima Muslim has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting legitimate businesses from unfair competition by strengthening market surveillance and enforcing quality standards.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Staff at the National FMCG Summit and Awards held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, Madam Shamima Muslim said no economy can achieve sustainable industrial growth if law-abiding businesses are forced to compete with counterfeit goods, smuggled products and other unfair trading practices.
She said businesses that comply with the law, pay taxes, invest in quality products and create jobs deserve a fair and predictable marketplace.
According to her, the government is working closely with the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division, the Food and Drugs Authority, the Ghana Standards Authority, law enforcement agencies and industry stakeholders to eliminate illicit trade and protect compliant businesses.
“Government remains firmly committed to working with regulatory institutions, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Food and Drugs Authority, the Ghana Standards Authority, law enforcement agencies and industry stakeholders to strengthen market surveillance, enforce quality standards and eliminate unfair competition,” she said.
Madam Shamima Muslim noted that the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division continues to recover millions of cedis in lost revenue every year through efforts to combat smuggling and strengthen border enforcement.
She said protecting legitimate businesses also safeguards consumers, preserves confidence in Ghana’s markets and protects government revenue while creating an environment where innovation, quality and enterprise can thrive.
Madam Shamima Muslim further urged businesses to support the fight against illicit trade by reporting individuals and companies engaged in illegal business activities, stressing that collective action is essential to building a fair and competitive business environment.
