Fire has destroyed Wahada House, one of the girls’ dormitories at Wa Islamic Senior High School, but firefighters contained it before it could spread to the adjoining Hijirah House.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the blaze occurred in the twin dormitory block. Two fire tenders from the Wa Municipal Fire Station and the Regional Headquarters Substation were deployed to the scene.

According to the GNFS, the fire engulfed Wahada House, destroying almost all student belongings. Each house contains about 5 rooms with an occupancy of about 30 students per room.

Firefighters stopped the fire from spreading to Hijirah House through a swift and coordinated response. No casualty was recorded.

The GNFS cited two major challenges during the operation. There were no fire hydrants within the area, and the headmaster did not have the emergency number of the Fire Service. He had to inform someone who ran to the fire station to alert personnel, a delay which contributed to the extent of damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
