Deputy Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum, has expressed surprise at the failure of authorities at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School (SHS) to offer the needed support for one of their students who passed away recently.
A final year student of the school was reportedly abandoned to die after he complained of stomach aches.
Students of the school accused the teachers of doing little to help the dying student because they feared he had COVID-19.
The death of the student led to violent demonstrations on campus which led to the destruction of several properties belonging to the school.
A vehicle belonging to the headmistress, Ms Felicia Amankwa Dankwa was also damaged in the process.
The headmistress has subsequently been interdicted by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Commenting on this on ‘Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ’, Dr Adutwum said he was shocked after seeing some students of the KNUST SHS offering help to their departed colleague while teachers in the school looked on unconcerned.
To him, it would not be out of order for GES and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reward the students who offered help in times of need.
“It would be good to reward the students for doing a good job. It’s good that they are rewarded for showing compassion to a dear colleague. At least, it is a good sign from the students…,” he said.
Dr Adutwum further said that his Ministry would take steps to ensure this would not occur again.
“Never again must a student be abandoned to die…,” he said.
