Health workers have called on government to take quick and practical measures to curtail the spread of COVID-19 among health professionals.
As more frontline workers contract the disease, the Ghana Medical Association and three other associations, in a joint statement, mentioned inadequate supply of PPEs to health workers and lack of designated holding bays for suspected cases as major causes of high rate of infections among health workers.
“Over 779 health workers had contracted the virus in the line of duty with a total of 9 deaths as at 30th June, 2020”, the press statement said.
A lot of health workers are currently in isolation awaiting their test results after being exposed to the virus in their work places, the statement added.
The associations are therefore entreating government to ensure regular provision of adequate PPEs for all health workers and availability of holding bays for suspected cases of COVID-19.
They further called for intensive education among the general public on COVID-19 preventive measures and the need to stop stigmatization.
The association reiterated that COVID-19 is real thus the public should adhere to all the safety protocols to curtail the spread.
“There is no available vaccine for COVID-19, the only way to prevent its spread is through strict adherence to the safety protocols at all times” the statement read.
