Road transport operators have set up a task force to monitor compliance of the approved fares which took effect from July 11, 2020.
According to the transport operators, their attention has been drawn to arbitrary increase of fares by some commercial drivers beyond the approved fees.
“Any commercial driver who flouts this arrangement would be sanctioned”, a statement from the road transport operators said.
The statement was signed on behalf of the operators by Kwame Kuma, National Chairman, Ghana Private Road Transport Union and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council.
Following a meeting with the operators, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Titus Glover, announced a 15 percent increment on transport fares on July 7, 2020.
This was to cater for losses of transport operators regarding the reduction of passengers in public transport in line with social distancing protocols.
The statement also informed passengers and drivers that the baseline for the calculation of 15 percent was that of the first scheduled increase in Road Transport Fares which took effect from September 1, 2019.
Vehicle drivers, commuters and the general public are reminded that the precautionary directives on social distancing in public transport vehicles and the safety protocols such as nose wearing are still in force, the statement concluded.
The transport operators urged union executives, company directors, station managers to ensure that there is compliance by drivers.
