The Independent member of parliament for Fomena Constituency, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has affirmed his intension to do business with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus of Parliament.
In a one-page letter sighted by Angelonline.com.gh dated January 13, 2021, and addressed to the Speaker, Albert Bagbin, the Fomena MP who doubles as the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament , said “I shall, for the purpose of transacting business in the house associate with the NPP Caucus in the Eighth Parliament.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, I do hereby affirm that I shall cooperate and collaborate with the NPP Caucus in the Eighth Parliament,” he added.
The letter was signed and copied to the leader of the NPP Caucus, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu.
This therefore, makes the NPP the majority in Parliament with 138 seats, breaking ties with the opposition NDC, who has 137 seats in the eighth parliament.
Background
Running up to the December 7 2020 elections, Mr. Asiamah who was running on the ticket of the NPP was suspended from the party. As a result, he contested the polls as an independent candidate which he won.
With NPP winning 137 seats and NDC matching them with same number, his independent membership therefore fomented public opinions where some had posited that he would be the king maker if he continues as an Independent MP.
But ever since the elections, there have been arguments between the two parties over which side becomes majority in Parliament.
