Members of Parliament (MPs) have called on government to, as a matter of urgency, support communities affected by tidal waves in the Ketu South municipality in the Volta region.
In a statement made on the floor by MP for Ho West, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah drew the attention of the House and government to the current situation of the people of Keta, Kedzikope and Abutiakope, who were seriously affected by the last Sunday tidal waves.
Mr. Bedzrah told the House the devastating nature of the tidal waves has rendered many homeless as buildings and properties were washed away by the sea leaving some to sleep in church buildings whilst others spent their nights outdoors.
“No as it were, mattresses, nor blankets, any logistics and as we speak now, nothing has gone to the communities or the affected people in the communities” the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Volta Caucus said.
MP for Ketu south, Dzifa Abla Gomashi who added her voice to the call, urged government to as matter of urgency take every necessary measure to aid the affected people in her constituency and its surroundings to save their lives.
She expressed worry over the alleged unconcerned attitude of government towards the victims of the disaster.
Madam Gomashie made this appeal in a press briefing with the Parliamentary Press Corps on behalf of other two members of Parliament in same region whose constituencies has equally been affected by same disaster.
Contributing to the statement, the Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Efutu Constituency refuted comments made by the minority suggesting that government had been unconcerned about the disaster.
Mr. Afenyo Markin explained that National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been to the scene doing everything possible within their mandate to assist the affected people.
He insisted that when issues of such nature come up, the MPs should not politicise them but rather address them as they are.
Meanwhile the Second Deputy Speaker who chaired the activities of the day, directed that the Works and Housing Committee of the House visits the scene for the needed assessment and report back to Parliament for a final decision to be made on the matter.
