The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has cancelled the subject results of 1,339 candidates who sat the 2021 West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over alleged examination malpractice.
The candidates according to the council had their results cancelled for engaging in “various examination malpractice such as bringing foreign materials including mobile phones into the examination hall, tearing off and collusion.”
It noted further that, the decision was made possible following approval of the 31st meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee held in October 2021.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by WAEC as signed by its Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Agnes Teye-Cudjo on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 to announce the release of the provisional examination results.
Also, “174 entire results of some candidates have been cancelled” WAEC disclosed in the statement.
Similarly, “the entire results of 3,667 candidates have been withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into various cases of examination malpractice detected during and after the conduct of the examination”.
Moreover, WAEC added that, scripts of candidates from 194 schools in certain subjects have also been withheld and are being scrutinized.
In this regards, the statement said, the results of the candidates maybe cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations.
However, English Language and Mathematics recorded a decline in performance rate of candidates at grade A1-C6 in this year’s examination with 54.08% and 54.11% respectively compared to the 55.34% and 65.71% recorded in 2020.
On the other hand, Social Studies and Integrated Science saw improvement in performance rate of candidates at grade A1-C6 with 66.03% and 65.70% in the 2021 examination as compared to the 64.31% and 52.53% in 2020.
A total of 446,352 candidates made up of 221,439 (49.6%) males and 224,913 (50.4%) females from 965 schools who sat for the 2021 WASSCE across the country.
