The Ghana Police Service has indicated that they are working round the clock to restore calm to Nima and its surroundings following Tuesday’s shoot out.
The service stated that there is heavy police presence within the neighbourhood in an attempt to restore peace and prevent a reprisal attack from the feuding gangs.
In an interview with Kofi Adoma Nwanwani on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo morning show, the Director of Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori, said that Nima is relatively safe and the police are on the ground to ensure there are no violent incidents anymore.
Speaking in the Twi parlance, he added that they are in touch with the Zongo chiefs, Imams, youth leaders as well as other stakeholders in a bid to gather information, keep peace and maintain law and order.
Responding to questions regarding presence of senior police administration at Nima Tuesday night, he stated that it was for community engagement following the 3:30pm shooting incident.
According to ACP Ofori, based on the IGP’s directive, he together with the Regional Police Commander and other officers were on the ground to engage the community members, gather information and reassure the public that they are safe.
We assured the citizens that we won’t sit aloof for the youth to take the laws into their hands to cause mayhem and also appealed to the conscience of the youth to desist from their violent acts, he added.
Regarding the number of deceased persons, ACP Kwesi Ofori indicated that the police would organise a second briefing today where the police would come out clearly with the details of what sparked the violence and shooting incident.
He however, revealed that officers were sent to various health centres such as Mamobi and Nyaho Polyclinics, 37 Military Hospital and Korle Bu Hospital to find out if any wounded victim or dead person was admitted there.
Meanwhile, Angel FM’s Mubarak Yakubu has reported that four persons have lost their lives.
ACP Kwesi Ofori also noted that seven persons are in police grips, with two at the police hospital under police guards.
