2024 Elections: Survey shows 53% of Ghanaians prefer John Mahama to Bawumia

The Global Info Analytics has projected that majority of Ghanaians preferred former President John Dramani Mahama as the presidential candidate over Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia going into the 2024 general elections.

According to the survey, while 53 percent of Ghanaians preferred the former President, the 30 percent also preferred the Vice President.

The poll also noted Mr Mahama was trusted by voters in areas of jobs, infrastructure and the economy than the Vice President.

However, the survey indicated that, in January, 43 percent had wanted John Mahama as President to 38 percent who also opted for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

This means, there has been an increment of 10 percent for the former President compared to a drop of 8 percent in that of the vice President, based on the provided data by Global Info Analytics.

That said, the respondents cited the economy, jobs, and education as the three main factors to consider before voting for a candidate in 2024.

While economy accounted for 20.88 percent, jobs rated 19.28 percent, and 17.24 percent went for education issues as presented in the table below.

Meanwhile, UK-based research firm, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has projected that the National Democratic Congress has a better chance of winning the 2024 general elections.

According to the EIU, the opposition party must revitalise its prospects with a fresh candidate over former President John Dramani Mahama.

EIU made this revelation in their five-year forecast for Ghana which was released on April 13, 2022.

“The next parliamentary and presidential elections are due in 2024. Under constitutionally mandated term limits, Mr Akufo-Addo, cannot run for a third term. Mr. Mahama, is reportedly considering whether to run again, but we expect the NDC to seek to revitalise its prospects with a fresh candidate”

“Our baseline forecast is that ongoing public dissatisfaction with the slow pace of improvements in governance – such as infrastructure development, job creation and easing of corruption – will trigger anti-incumbency factors and push the electorate to seek a change. The NDC, therefore, stands a reasonable chance of winning the 2024 elections.” the EIU said.

However, the Communication Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Yaw Buaben Asamoah, reacting to the report stated that losing power to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections will not be news.

According to him, breaking the eight year jinx as targeted by the NPP would be a more unusual event than an NDC victory, based on the history of elections in the Fourth Republic.
